A Story of Hope and Second Chances in Mt Elgon.

In the heart of Mt Elgon, a community rich in culture and resilience, we reached out to over 70 teenage girls in an effort to address some of the most pressing challenges affecting their lives today. The outreach was centered on education, empowerment, and restoring hope to girls who have been greatly affected by teenage pregnancy, school dropouts, and limited access to menstrual hygiene resources.
During the session, the girls were sensitized on menstrual hygiene and health, learning how to properly care for themselves, manage their periods with dignity, and break the silence and shame that often surrounds menstruation. We also held open and honest conversations on teenage pregnancy, HIV awareness, and the importance of making informed life choices. The girls were guided on self-grooming and personal hygiene, helping them understand that taking care of their bodies is an important part of self-worth and confidence.
Mt Elgon continues to experience a worrying rise in the number of teenage mothers, a challenge that has led to many girls dropping out of school at a very young age. This issue has deeply affected not only the girls but also the future of the community as a whole. During our interaction, we met teenage mothers carrying heavy responsibilities some already caring for small children while still children themselves.
To support them practically, we distributed sanitary pads to the girls and diapers to teenage mothers with young children, easing a small but significant burden in their daily lives. The smiles, relief, and gratitude on their faces reminded us why this work matters.
The most encouraging part of the outreach was the girls’ strong desire to return to school. Despite the challenges they have faced, many expressed hope, determination, and readiness to continue their education if given the opportunity. Education remains their greatest chance at breaking the cycle of poverty, early motherhood, and limited opportunities.
We are therefore calling upon well-wishers, partners, and kind-hearted supporters to help these girls reclaim their dreams by supporting them with school fees and basic educational needs. Together, we can give these girls a second chance one that allows them to learn, grow, and build a brighter future for themselves and for Mt Elgon.
When a girl is educated, a community is transformed.
