In the heart of Kenya, a quiet revolution is taking place. At the forefront of this movement is Jemimah Nyarondia, founder of Born to Be Awesome Initiative, a grassroots organization dedicated to menstrual health and hygiene, and women’s empowerment.
For a while now, Born to Be Awesome has been a beacon of support for women and girls across Kenya, providing education, resources, and a safe space for dialogue. But recently, their mission expanded to embrace a community often overlooked and underserved: the intersex community.
“It was a natural progression for us,” Jemimah explains, her voice tinged with passion and determination. “We realized that the issues of menstrual health and empowerment extend beyond traditional gender boundaries. Everyone deserves access to education, support, and dignity, regardless of their gender identity.”
Partnering with like-minded organizations and advocates (Jinsiangu and Virtuous Life Store) , Born to Be Awesome embarked on a journey to better understand the unique challenges faced by intersex individuals in Kenya. Through open dialogue and community engagement, they listened to stories of resilience, courage, and the daily struggles of navigating a world that often fails to recognize their existence.
“Our goal is not to impose solutions, but to amplify voices and support initiatives that empower the intersex community,” says the Born to Be Awesome representative, who has been instrumental in fostering collaboration and understanding. “We believe in co-creating solutions that respect and honor the diversity of human experience.”
The journey has been both enlightening and humbling for the Born to Be Awesome team. They have learned that menstruation is not a one-size-fits-all experience and that traditional menstrual products may not meet the needs of intersex individuals. Yet, through creativity, innovation, and a deep commitment to inclusivity, they are exploring new avenues to provide support and solutions.
As they continue their work, Born to Be Awesome remains guided by their core values of empathy, empowerment, and equality. They envision a future where every person, regardless of gender identity, can fully participate in society with dignity and respect.
“We still have a long way to go,” Jemimah acknowledges, her eyes alight with determination. “But we are inspired by the strength and resilience of the intersex community. Together, we will build a more inclusive and equitable world for all.”
In the tapestry of Kenya’s diverse communities, Born to Be Awesome Initiative is weaving a thread of hope, acceptance, and belonging. And as they journey forward, they carry with them the voices and dreams of those who dare to be different, daring to be awesome.
