Our recent outreach to St. Mary’s Girls Secondary School in Isiolo and Merille Mixed Secondary School in Laisamis was a powerful reminder of the importance of education, dignity, and community support.
During our visit, we conducted interactive sessions on menstrual hygiene and health, creating safe spaces for students to learn, ask questions, and share their experiences. At St. Mary’s Girls Secondary School, the students actively participated in the discussions, showing great enthusiasm and a desire to learn more about managing their menstrual health with confidence and dignity.
At Merille Mixed Secondary School, we encountered a different challenge. Due to cultural beliefs and stigma surrounding menstruation, many of the boys were initially hesitant to participate in the discussions. However, as the session progressed, they began to understand the importance of menstrual health education and how supporting girls can help create a more inclusive and respectful school environment. By the end of the session, many of the boys were engaged, asking questions, and contributing positively to the conversation.
To support the students further, we distributed sanitary pads, panties, and boxers, ensuring that girls have access to essential menstrual products while promoting personal hygiene among all students.
Beyond menstrual health education, we also donated soccer balls, volleyballs, and water filters to the schools. These resources will help promote physical activity, teamwork, and access to clean drinking water, contributing to the overall well-being of the students.
The gratitude expressed by both the students and teachers was truly heartwarming. They shared how valuable the sessions were and encouraged us to return for future visits. Their warm reception and eagerness to continue learning inspire us to keep reaching more schools and communities.
Together, we are breaking stigma, promoting dignity, and empowering young people with the knowledge and resources they need to thrive.
